Illinois Driving Rules

Our Driving School Requirements

The State of Illinois requires students be 15 years of age or older when beginning the classroom portion of drivers education for retention purposes. Students must be 16 years of age and hold their instruction permit for 9 months to be eligible for their license.

Illinois Probationary License Requirements

  1. Be 16 years of age.
  2. Complete an approved driver education class.
  3. Accumulate 50 hours of behind-the-wheel driving experience. (10 of which must be at night)
  4. A parent or adult sponsor must certify on the MV3001 form (driver license application) the completion of 50 hours of driving experience. (10 at night)
  5. Hold an instructional permit for a minimum of 9 months.
  6. Receive no moving traffic violations resulting in a conviction for the six months prior to the date of application for this license. Including, Seat Belt Violations and Juvenile Alcohol.
  7. Pass a driving skills test.
  8. Pay the required fees.

Illinois Probationary License Restrictions

If a student is under 18, for the first nine months of holding the probationary license, the student may drive but with the following restrictions:

  1. From 6 AM to 10 PM Sunday - Thursday, a student may drive alone and travel anywhere. In addition, any number of immediate family members (including legal guardian) and the following people can be passengers:
    • No more than one passenger younger than 20.
  2. From 6 AM to 11 PM Friday - Saturday, a student may drive alone and travel anywhere. In addition, any number of immediate family members (including legal guardian) and the following people can be passengers:
    • No more than one passenger younger than 20.
  3. Restrictions will be extended if the student does any of the following:
    • is convicted of a moving traffic violation.
    • violates any of the restrictions.
    • has license revoked or suspended for any reason.

    Note: The terms of the passenger and time-of-day restriction stops while any operating privilege is suspended or revoked. It resumes again when the operating privilege is reinstated.
